Trail by Trail: Koochiching State Forest, Chisholm, Cook County, Wisconsin
Koochiching State Forest- After this spring’s flood the DNR has a few road closure updates. Five of the eight roads through the forest are now completely open. Rifle Range Road is closed to any vehicles over 2,000 lbs gross vehicle weight and Wisner Road is open to vehicles under four tons. Watch for storm damage on the roads, especially Caldwell Road.
“The Chisholm ATV Trail system remains open and in fair condition. STARTING AUGUST 22nd-Dec 1st, St. Louis County Public Works is closing CR 65 for a Bridge replacement project and there will be no access to the Taconite Trail North of Side Lake from the Chisholm ATV Trail during that time. We don’t expect any closures of the Chisholm ATV Trail till Minnesota Rifle Deer Hunting Season. Always see the most up-to-date trail data including closures on Polaris Ride Command App.

Cook County, MN- The County Highway Department announced a new a multi-use trail. The trail will be located on the West side of the Gunflint Trail from TH 61to CR 7. It will be a paved ten-foot wide trail for pedestrian and cyclist use. Construction is set to begin on August fifteenth and should last about a month.
Wisconsin- The DNR is taking input on the future of natural areas. The plan focuses on the North Central Forest which spans 9,500 square miles across 20 counties. The DNR is interested in protecting habitats and also creating recreational opportunities The DNR’s Input Survey has several questions addressing the possibility of future trails in the region.
