Trail Report from Mesabi Trail:

The Mesabi Trail currently stretches almost 150 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely. When totally completed by the fall of 2023 it will traverse just about 165 miles – from the Mississippi to the Boundary Waters.

The Trail is owned and managed by St. Louis & Lake Counties Regional Rail Authority – their mission is “To preserve abandoned railway for future transportation purposes”. The Rail Authority also owns the scenic train from Duluth to the North Shore.

Construction began on this paved asphalt trail in 1996 and completion of the vision is just around the corner. The trail has been built on old railway, old mining and logging roads, an abandoned highway and sometimes cutting a path through the woods to get from here to there.

The diversity of the Mesabi Trail from old mine pits now full of emerald blue water to quiet stretches through the forest where you will be sure to see wildlife, to the tallest bridge in Minnesota (in Virginia) and a ¾ long floating bridge (in Embarrass). Pedal through 29 communities and stop for a burger and a beer along the way, visit museums, state parks, mine overlooks, and experience the hospitality and beauty of Northern Minnesota and the Iron Range.

One of the best (and most fun) ways to experience the trail is by riding in the annual Great River Energy Mesabi Trail Bike Tour. This year’s tour is on Saturday, August 20th. Choose from four different routes all starting/finishing at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm – 16 miles (out & back) from Buhl, 36 miles from Mountain Iron, 46 miles from O’Brien Reservoir and 64 miles from Calumet. Entry includes a t-shirt, food and music at rest stops and the finish line. $45 per person – kids 16 and under ride free – registration closes August 7th at midnight. Register now online. For more information go to A wheel pass is required to ride the Mesabi Trail, $15 for an annual or $5 for a three-day. Available online or at vendors along the trail.

Trail Report from Gogebic Range Trail Authority:

“We have a membership meeting at 11 a.m. Bessemer, MI at the Pit Stop bar and grill. Following the meeting will be a work meeting to assemble and stand up our Bald Mountain Volunteer Memorial Trail Teepee Warming Shelter at Bald Mountain. It’s been a 12-month project encompassing hundreds of volunteer hours.”

Minnesota- There will be two classes late this year and early next hosted by the MN DNR for their Trail Ambassador Program. Classes are about 6 and a half hours and cover all aspects of trail maintenance. From monitoring conditions to learning about policies, equipment and public relations. Attendees must be a member of an off-highway vehicle organization to participate.

Tips: If you or someone who know is part of a local ATV club or alliance let us know! Send in a report, to, and it might be featured as we go around the Northland,Trail by Trail.
