CLOQUET, MN -- A Cloquet man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a woman, her toddler, and an unborn baby.

A judge sentenced Sheldon Thompson, 35, Wednesday, several weeks after he was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder.

He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences, the first two without option of release and the last one with the option for release after 30 years.

The bodies of Jackie Defoe, her son Kevin, and her unborn baby were found in the Cloquet home in March of 2020.

During the trial, prosecutors had argued Thompson had a history of violence, planned their murders, and showed evidence that alleged Thompson was the father of the unborn baby.

The defense argued the murders were not premeditated and pointed to untrustworthy testimony from witnesses they claim abused drugs.

Family and friends shared statements in the courtroom Wednesday about how their deaths have impacted them.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
