Gov. Walz signs bill giving bonuses to post 9/11 veterans
St. Paul, MN-- On Tuesday, Minnesota Governor Walz signed the 2022 Veterans and Military Affairs budget bill into law.
The legislation includes an amendment authored by Julie Sandstede of Hibbing to provide $25 million worth of service bonuses to post-9/11-era veterans and Gold Star families.
“While we can’t thank veterans enough for their service, these bonuses represent a strong token of appreciation for those who have made immeasurable sacrifices for the rest of us,” Rep. Sandstede said.
Minnesota Veterans who served between 9/11 and the end of the War on Terror would be eligible for the bonus.
Bonus amounts under the new law would be $600 for those who did not serve in the Afghanistan or Iraq campaigns and $1,200 for those who served in Afghanistan or Iraq.
The bill also includes 2,000 for Gold Star families of veterans who served in Afghanistan or Iraq and died directly due to their service.
The application period for the bonus program would run from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2024.
