DULUTH, MN-- Duluth’s growing goose population is making it hard to re-grow wild rice near the St. Louis River.

That’s a big reason why the City of Duluth is setting up a goose management plan.

Several groups have been trying to re-establish the wild rice beds in the river’s estuary for several years now.

But Canadian geese are eating it.

Since those geese are a federally protected species, the Minnesota DNR requires a management plan before it can issue any permits to manage the population.

So the city’s proposed plan lays out several ideas including fencing, predator decoys, hunting and some different methods of euthanizing the animals.

There will be a public information meeting May 23.
