DULUTH, MN. (CBS3 Duluth) - After 23 games on the road, the UMD baseball team is back where they belong, at home in Bulldog Country for their home opener against the Winona State Warriors.

16th-year head coach Bob Rients leads the Bulldogs. His 2022 squad includes four seniors and four fifth-years. UMD also welcomes fourteen freshmen to the diamond. At the same time, they have contrast in age; the maroon and gold look to fill the gaps by gaining momentum at home in the middle part of their schedule.

Rients says they are also focused on embracing resiliency in this next stretch of games at home.

“We wanna make sure we play well at home and that we are able to weather a few storms. We know we aren’t going to play a perfect game, but we have to be able to overcome some mistakes that we have, and that’s something that has been a forefront for our coaching staff and players,” said Rients.

“Our pitchers this year have done a lot better job controlling the run game and not allowing extra bases for the other team, which obviously keeps more runs on the board, and offensively, we are doing a really great job taking those extra bases and just hustling and doing those extra things,” said Pokornowski.

The Bulldogs’ five-game stretch over the course of three days begins on Sunday. The first pitch for game one against Winona is set for 1:30 pm at Wade Stadium.
