VIRGINIA, MN. (CBS 3 Duluth) - Lawmakers from several states made their way to the Iron Range Thursday in hopes of better understanding the mining industry.

Representatives from Alabama, Arizona, California, Washington, and Wisconsin joined Congressman Pete Stauber in Virginia.

They took a tour of Minntac and then gathered for a roundtable discussion with industry leaders.

Representatives learned about the impacts of the industry on the country as a whole and the regulatory process for both copper-nickel and iron mining.

Rep. Stauber said this was also an opportunity to highlight some of the challenges the iron mining industry faces.

“Some of our mines have a couple of years left. What we want to do is expand in those areas where ore is more prevalent and cost-effective to mine, and we know we can do it up here on the Range,” said Stauber.

Among the lawmakers there Thursday was Rep. Dan Newhouse from the state of Washington. He is the Chair of the Congressional Western Caucus.

Newhouse said their committee focuses on problems rural areas face.

“We want to know what the issues are so we can talk as passionately about some of these things because we’ve been able to see it firsthand and we understand. We need to be able to bring that message back to members of Congress who haven’t had that opportunity.”

Industry experts from both iron mining and copper-nickel mining also spoke at Thursday’s event.
