1 dead, 2 critically injured in crash near Ely

10:30 P.M. UPDATE: A woman has died after a crash on Highway 169 near Ely.

According to the State Patrol, it happened Thursday evening when an SUV crossed the center line, hitting a pickup truck head-on.

A passenger in the pickup, 72-year-old Patricia Marsnik of Ely was killed in the crash.

The other passenger in the pickup, 80-year-old Raymond Marsnik of Ely suffered life-threatening injuries.

He was rushed to Essentia in Duluth.

The driver of the SUV, 38-year-old Ryan Reid of Superior also suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Essentia in Duluth.

The driver of the pickup suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Roads were snow and ice-covered at the time of the crash.

ELY, MN. (KBJR) - A bad crash involving multiple vehicles has closed Highway 169 just southwest of Ely.

It happened just before 5 p.m. near Wolf Creek Pass.

As of 7 p.m. the highway remained closed in both directions.

No word yet from the State Patrol on injuries or what led to the crash.

A photo of the scene from a MnDOT camera shows a large emergency response, including two fire trucks.

MnDOT is reporting that stretch of road to be partially snow-covered.
