GRAND RAPIDS, MN -- A Grand Rapids attorney has been charged after investigators say he sexually assaulted a client.

Jesse Powell, 32, is charged with one count of third-degree and four counts of fifth-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

The victim told investigators he was representing her in her divorce at the time.

Court records say the misconduct occurred from February through August, 2021.

The complaints range from non-consensual kissing and touching to one incident where the victim says Powell raped her at his office.

She changed lawyers in August.

Powell faces 15 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him.

Court documents show Powell has a history of misconduct, dating back to at least 2018.

A harrassment order was filed against him in March, 2021.

Before that, he was suspended from his position as Itasca County’s Assistant County Attorney for sexually harassing co-workers.

An advocacy group is asking any other possible victims to come forward.
