11 A.M. FRIDAY UPDATE-- Authorities have identified the Babbitt man who died in a crash near Ely Thursday night.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, George Amitrano, 74, was heading south on County Rd. 21 in Morse Township around 3:30 p.m.

Authorities say he lost control of his pickup truck, went into the ditch, and rolled over.

Amitrano was the only person in the truck.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, snowy and icy roads may have contributed to the crash.

ELY, MN. (KBJR) - An Iron Range man has died after a crash on a slick roadway.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 3:30 Thursday afternoon on Highway 21 North near Ely.

Few details are available, but officials say the crash involved just one car and took the life of a 74-year-old Babbitt man.

His name has not been released.

While it’s unclear what happened, the Sheriff’s Office tells us slippery road conditions were a contributing factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
