DULUTH, MN. (CBS 3 Duluth) - DULUTH, MN - Hundreds lined up for CHUM’s distribution of 100 Thanksgiving meals at Our Saviors Luthern Church on Monday.

For some like Lynda Jablonski, it’s a gift for her family.

“My granddaughter is home with her two kids, teenagers, so I wanted to give it to her. And I really appreciate all of this and this food means they’ll get thanksgiving dinner,” Jablonski said.

Scott Van Daele, Director of CHUM, said over the years there has been an increasing need for food security in the community.

And although its expensive to prepare the meals, Van Daele said it’s worthwhile.

“The scary part is I’ve been here five or six years and that need has grown that much so quick it’s just an amazing thing to see happen, see it all come together and see the community at large make it happen,” Van Daele said.

Van Daele said since the preparation began in June, turkey shortages, high demand, and higher prices made distribution extra difficult this year.

But with an anonymous $18,000 donation to CHUM’s food shelf, organizers were able to give more food away.

“Everything that it costs to do this is over $20,000 dollars and to watch that disappear in a matter of hours is scary to me. To see how much goes out and then how much it costs to put it out,” Van Daele said.

Jablonski said she gives out these meals to families and friends in need each year.

“It’s important because of Thanksgiving and to be with the family and the kids have a nice dinner and share all this together,” Jablonski said.

The 100 meal boxes were gone in 30 minutes.

Organizers said it shows the need for food, evident. A need they will continue to work on with the Northland community.

CHUM is distributing 200 more Thanksgiving meals Wednesday at the Chum Food Shelf in downtown Duluth.

You can pick up a meal from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
