DULUTH, MN. (CBS 3 Duluth) - It’s been a long three weeks for the UMD Women’s Hockey Team. They were off to allow some of their players to participate in Olympic Qualifying. The last time UMD took the ice as a team was back in October.

Maura Crowell said they’d be ready to go up at Bemidji State Friday afternoon, and you could say that was an understatement.

Just a few minutes into the hockey game, newly appointed assistant captain Gabbie Hughes says, if you’re going to give me this, I’m going to take it. Dogs go up 1-0.

A few minutes later, a slap shot finds its way to McKenzie Hewett’s stick. She buries it, and then the floodgates blow open.

Five first-period goals for the Bulldogs. Elizabeth Giguere had five assists in the game, the first UMD player to record five points in a game since 2013. She also became the 9th player in NCAA history to reach 250 career points.

Soderberg gets the shutout, and the dogs win big, 9-0. Bulldogs are back at it in part two of the series Saturday. Puck drops at 2:01 pm.
