Esko prepares for first state semifinal since 1992
DULUTH, MN. (CBS 3) - For the first time since the early ‘90s, the Esko football team has advanced to the state football semifinals.
The Eskomos are the seven seed in Class AAA, and will take on Dassel-Cockato on Saturday night at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
“The kids are obviously fired up to go play, it’s something they’ve talked about and dreamt about. Their hard work is now paying off, and they’re getting to do what they wanted to do,” said head coach Scott Arntson.
Athletic director Chad Stoskopf helped to arrange three practices for the team at the Proctor Indoor Sports Center throughout the week Arntson says that taking the cold and windy elements out of the situation helps to keep the kids focused, and also simulates more the a game-type environment they’ll get on Saturday.
Both Dassel-Cockato and Esko enter the matchup with undefeated records, with a trip to the Class AAA Prep Bowl on the line.
Like even coming in here, people were saying go represent northern Minnesota, and it’s starting to sink in that the pressure is really on,” said senior lineman Jake Majerle.
“I’ve just heard that it’s a surreal experience, and we’re all super excited to finally make it there.”
Kickoff between the Eskomos and Chargers is set for 4:30p.m. on Saturday. For the full Class AAA bracket, click here.
