Cloquet’s Sam Baker commits to Florida Gulf Coast
DULUTH, MN. (CBS 3) - Cloquet senior golfer Sam Baker has announced his commitment to play division one golf at Florida Gulf Coast University.
Baker boasts an illustrious high school golf resume, including a state championship (individual and team) and Minnesota Junior PGA Tournament title. Recently, Baker was named MGA Junior Player of the Year.
He says his decision was between FGCU and Minnesota, but the Eagles ultimately won out in the end. They offered him a scholarship, and the opportunity to play year-round.
“The coach helped me along, he was really nice, and he really wanted me. There are actually a couple of Minnesota guys on the team right now, and that made it a little bit more of home,” said Baker.
He was also quick to thank his friends and family who helped him along the way to his division one commitment.
“A big thanks to my grandpa, he’s really helped me a lot, he would bring me out, drag me out on the course at 6am and go to Black Bear. And then drop me off at the Country Club after, and play 36 afterwards with my buddies. And that was another thing too, I was pretty lucky with having six guys around at the course that were my age that wanted to play, so it just really helped to have those group of guys.”
Immediately after signing, Baker departed Cloquet for the airport, and the opportunity to play with his new college teammates down in Fort Meyers, Florida.
