Split Rock Lighthouse to hold annual ceremony Wednesday remembering Edmund Fitzgerald crew
TWO HARBORS, MN. (CBS 3 Duluth) - On Wednesday, Split Rock Lighthouse will hold its annual ceremony remembering the lives lost when the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter sank into Lake Superior 46 years ago.
A total of 29 crew members were lost on Nov. 10, 1975.
Wednesday’s commemoration will include the lighting of the 1,000-watt beacon, reading of the names of the crew members lost, and a chance to reflect on all lives lost in Great Lakes shipwrecks.

The lighthouse didn’t allow visitors for the Edmund Fitzgerald’s memorial in 2020 due to COVID-19.
This year’s ceremony will be a hybrid, with the lighthouse grounds open to the public and a livestream for those who can’t attend.
The in-person events will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, with the beacon lighting planned for 4:30 p.m. CT.
Site visitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight or headlamp as the grounds and trails are unlit.
