Several other charges were dismissed.
The shooting happened in St. Cloud in June 2021.
Beckman told authorities he had been using drugs for days leading up to the incident.
He stole a car and thought he saw a man point a gun at him in a grocery store parking lot.
Beckman crashed that car in a yard and shot the professor, Edward Anthony Ward, 68, when he came to the front door.
According to court documents, Ward was shot multiple times.
