The No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team sophomore goaltender Hunter Shephard was named the third NCAA Hockey Star of the Week on Tuesday following his weekend performance in the NCHC quarterfinals.

The Cohasset, Minn. pitched back-to-back shutouts to sweep Western Michigan and advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff this weekend.

Shephard made a total of 45 saves over the weekend in route to the shutouts.

He now has posted eight shutouts this season, expanding his single-season program record, which also ranks second in the nation. 

UMD will return to the ice this weekend when they face No. 4 Denver in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center scheduled for 7:38 p.m.
